Content marketing is clearly here to stay. In the most recent study of B2B marketers from the Content Marketing Institute, 88 percent of respondents said that their organization uses content marketing. In that same study, however, only 30 percent of those marketers said that they believed they were effective with their content marketing efforts. Today, companies of all sizes create and market content for many reasons: to generate and nurture leads, engage and educate audiences, build trust and credibility, advance their industry, and to attract and retain customers. It’s a phenomenon that leads to billions of pieces of content being created and shared (some estimate 4.75 billion pieces shared online daily). And that is part of the reason that so few content marketers feel successful with their efforts. It’s hard to cut through the clutter. Getting your content to shine through means it has to be remarkable, and it needs to be produced with a plan.

Originally, it had involved direct mail that the Matillion team was going to send to target audiences in their office. Kolb said they decided on an alternative digital approach, upping the ante with personalization efforts. “You don’t need the latest and greatest technology or idea to create a hypothesis and run a small test to see if it works,” Kolb said. Billtrust’s Director of Revenue Marketing Deirdre Mills also champions personalization. While she believes that ABM is more of an art than a science, she ties relevant prospect information into program data, keeping company initiatives in mind.

The US business climate is being shaken by events at home and abroad, and (as I write this) no-one knows with certainty on top of the risk and strain caused by a global pandemic whether an economic downturn is imminent, or how severe it might be, and for how long. Most B2B marketers we talk to are continuing to plan, develop and execute campaigns and other initatives, for the time being at least. Even then, we’re having many conversations on how clients should approach demand generation strategy in the coming weeks.
